Benefits of Cranberries

Late fall is the season for cranberries!  We love these tart little berries, but did you know that these beautiful ruby fruits are associated with a variety of excellent health benefits?

Cranberries are loaded with with antioxidants and phytonutrients, including anthocyanin, quercetin and other flavanoids.  They help fight free radicals, reduce systemic inflammation, slow the aging process and keep our skin looking beautiful and fresh.  They have been found to be particularly helpful for the cardiovascular system by protecting against atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, balancing cholesterol levels and reducing low grade inflammation.

Cranberries are probably best known for their urinary protective properties.  Fresh cranberries and 100% pure unsweetened cranberry juice help UTIs by lowering the pH of the urine, which can help to kill off some urinary tract infections and possibly prevent them in susceptible people.  It is important to note that people with interstitial cystitis (IC), Aspirin/salicylate allergies or oxalate kidney stones should avoid cranberries and cranberry juice as they may worsen symptoms or cause a flare up.

Beyond UTIs, cranberries help to boost the immune system and are extremely anti-inflammatory, particularly in the GI system and the gums.  Fresh raw cranberries/unsweetened 100% pure cranberry juice can be very helpful for those with gingivitis and inflammatory bowel disease along with many other inflammatory conditions.
