The Deeper Meaning of Hunger

“Hunger can really be about much more than food. Hunger can be about the need for comfort and nurturance, the need for self-expression, the need for spiritual fulfillment. Any of these needs, when unfulfilled, can leave us feeling a certain emptiness inside. But when we interpret all hunger as a hunger for food, those other needs get buried deeper and deeper and never get taken care of.”

~Anita Johnston, Ph.D ~Eating in the Light of the Moon

I love this quote and I feel it really works both ways- we either stuff down feelings with food to numb our pain or deny our pain and in the process deprive ourselves of nourishment.  As women we so often have a very self-destructive and negative relationship with food.  If we are either eating too much or too little we are focusing on the food instead healing the deeper hurts and self-limiting beliefs.  I have said throughout my career it is never really about the food.  It is the feelings and beliefs behind the food that are the real problem, the food is just a mask.
